Objective:To assess the efficacy of sildenafil (Viagra) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in women with a previous history of ED. A multicentre, double-blind, randomised study design was used. Patients were randomised to one of two groups: one of sildenafil (n=42) and the other of the placebo (n=42). The patients were treated with sildenafil for 5 weeks. The efficacy of sildenafil in the treatment of ED was assessed by means of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and the Patient Global Impotence Scale (PGIS). The efficacy of sildenafil for ED was assessed by means of the Erectile Function Assessment (EFAB) scale, the Erectile Function in Treatment (EFITS) scale and the Clinical Global Impotence Scale (CGT).
Methods:A total of 34, of which 14 were female and 19 were male, were recruited. The baseline characteristics of the participants were recorded at baseline and during the sildenafil treatment. The patients who were included in the study received sildenafil and placebo during the study period. All patients were followed up over the course of the study. The Erectile Function in Treatment (EFITS) scale showed a significant increase in mean scores (14.5±5.8, P < 0.001) of all the parameters. The EFAB scale showed an increase in mean scores of 22.3±5.8, P < 0.001 in the sildenafil group compared with the placebo group. The EFITS and CGT showed no significant difference (P = 0.89, P = 0.85).
Conclusion:Sildenafil has a positive effect in the treatment of ED in women with previous ED.
